Branch Lines
Branch Line from Leek
to the Manifold Valley
by Vic Mitchell
The Leek & Manifold Light Railway was authorised and built in two parts, which were standard gauge and narrow gauge. Only the latter section is normally offered under that title, but herein is the full journey.
It passes through superb scenery and reaches into several quarries. Featured are the narrow gauge wagons that could carry standard gauge.
Reviews:
'This area is one of increasing interest not only to the railway historian but the industrial achaeologist. The ambitious plans of the Churnet Valley Railway look likely to further increase study of the area - a very handy book indeed.'
(The Journal of the Stephenson Locomotive Society, Nov/Dec 2017, No.908, Vol.93)
'A pleasing volume and a good addition to the Middleton Press 'Ultimate Rail Encyclopedia' collection.'
(Ffestiniog Railway Magazine, No. 237, Summer 2017)
'An excellent photographic record of a line of great historical interest despite the relatively short length of the route.'
(The Railway Observer, Vol.87, June 2017)
