Country Railway Routes

Hull to Scarborough

including the Filey Holiday Camp Branch

by Keith Smith

The route of this album is titled The Yorkshire Coast Line. Once thronging with holiday traffic, it is now more aptly described as a ‘minor line’. Starting at Hull, it heads north over the East Riding of Yorkshire towards Beverley. From Driffield, it turns back towards the east coast, running up to Scarborough, where it terminates. Included within are many maps and photographs covering the line’s history over many decades.

'Steam locomotives such as G5s, B16s and D49s will stir memories of the huge volume of holiday traffic that once graced this route. Other photographs add to the jigsaw of railway history.'
(The Railway Observer, Vol.92 No.1115, January 2022)

'Everything is presented on good-quality stock with clear and informative captions to complement the photographs. As usual, it’s yet a journey along the lines (please excuse the pun) of what’s really been lost – in the case of some of the connecting routes, completely.'
(Tony Wright,, December 2021)

'A well-timed book, for the 175th anniversary of the Hull to Scarborough Railway line in 2022. The book is well researched, complimented by a wide range of historical notes, much wider than being 'just another railway book'.'
(Nick Harvey, Friends of Hunmanby Railway Station)
