Eastern Main Lines
Gainsborough to Sheffield
from Brigg and Torksey
by Vic Mitchell & Keith Smith
The terrain changes greatly on the routes and thus the freight traffic has varied over the years. Early electrification began in the Sheffield area.
All these issues are illustrated herein, along with a great variety of stations and trains, both freight and passenger.
Reviews:
[Review on both Gainsborough to Sheffield and Branch Lines North of Grimsby:]
'Lavishly illustrated with pictures from the steam and diesel eras, these books also contain very informative maps, together with many old timetables recalling an era when trains were the main form of public transport.'
(Nostalgia - Scunthorpe Telegraph, 4th October 2018)
[Review on both Gainsborough to Sheffield and Sheffield Towards Manchester:] 'The pair cover both the steam and modern eras, with good coverage of the 1500v DC electrification in addition to the usual steam and diesel traction.... Taken as a pair, these two titles cover the former GCR's routes from Brigg & Torksey in the east westwards via Sheffield to Guide Bridge in the Manchester conurbation area.'
(The Journal of The Stephenson Locomotive Society, Sept/Oct 2018, No.914, Vol.94)
'Following the usual format the line and environs are well illustrated with notable photographs and supplemented by the usual maps and a specimen timetable... Recommended to add to the now extensive collection by these two authors.' [REB]
(The Railway Observer, August 2018, Vol.88, No.1074)
'The book covers evolution of the route from its secondary and sometimes rural beginnings to its role in conveying millions of tons of coal, mined within the region, to the many post-war coal-fired power stations built abong the Trent. Many images cover the transition from steam to diesel-electric on such duties.'
(National Railway Museum Review, No. 164, Summer 2018)
'Messrs Mitchell and Smith are fast moving towards concluding their tour of Eastern Region routes. This book covers lines and stations that have clung on for dear life for 25 years but are now promised a brighter future under Network Rail.'
(Steam World, Issue 372, June 2018)
