Nottingham towards Kirkby in Ashfield
The GCR Route 1898 to 1966
by David Pearce
The Great Central route north of Nottingham has been closed for over fifty years and has largely been obliterated from the landscape. It is hard to believe the Nottingham to Kirkby section included a marshalling yard, loco shed and several junctions as it laced its way up the Leen Valley alongside two other railway companies. It may have gone but has not been forgotten.
'David is to be congratulated for presenting a surprising range of unfamiliar views. Each station is well represented...
'It will deservedly find a place on the bookshelves of most GC-minded enthusiasts.'
(Forward - Journal of the Great Central Railway Society, No.204, June 2020)
'Middleton Press takes us to this once-bustling Great Central Main Line location...
'We can still be reminded of the glory days when York-Bournemouth through trains were one of the daily highlights, local stations with their familiar island platforms were well patronised, and crawling freights of all descriptions clogged the air.'
(Steam World, July 2020)
'All are produced to the usual, excellent standard and follow the publisher's usual style of coloured cover with mono pages. I doubt there is a Journal reader who has not already seen and bought at least one title from this extensive encyclopaedic seral.'
(John New – SLS Journal, Sept/Oct 2020, no. 925, vol. 96)
[review covering: Nottingham towards Kirkby-in-Ashfield, New Mills to Sheffield, Ambergate to Mansfield, Derby-Ilkeston-Nottingham & Manchester to Bacup]
'As a portrait of an industrial landscape with one of its principal rail arteries, all now entirely disappeared, this is a very good effort.'
