Northern Lines

Leeds to Harrogate

including Otley, Wetherby, Pilmoor and Poppleton (towards York)

by Mark Kelly

Of the railway routes covered in this book, only the line from Leeds to York via Harrogate remains open. Although this is largely operated as a single entity, its two sections differ enormously. The section from Leeds to Harrogate is still very much a main line, hosting services to and from King’s Cross, whilst the section from Harrogate to York is partially singled and features semaphore signals and manually operated level crossings. This section was also proposed for closure in the Beeching Report, but permission was not granted.
Of the other routes covered, Arthington to Otley and Leeds to Wetherby were victims of Beeching, whereas the line from Knaresborough to Pilmoor closed to passengers as early as 1950, closing completely in 1964.
