Settle to Carlisle

Including THE BRANCH LINES TO HAWES

by Roy Davies

Colour and Black & White Photographs

Renowned railway writer, O. S. Nock, described the Settle and Carlisle as ‘Britain’s Most Spectacular Main Line’. The 73 mile (115km) line runs through remote areas of the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines boasting no less than 14 tunnels and 22 viaducts either up the Long Drag or down the Eden Valley to Carlisle. The spectacular and often very bleak landscapes along with masterpieces of railway engineering, including the iconic Ribblehead viaduct, are captured in stunning photographs many in colour throughout this album, where trains are often dwarfed by their surroundings.
