Beattock to Carstairs

Including the Moffat, Wanlockhead, Peebles (CR) and Dolphinton (CR) branches

by Dennis Lovett

The climb north of Beattock through the Lowther Hills provided spectacular scenery for passengers and demanding work for those on the footplate. Four branch lines provided additional traffic. After Beattock Summit, the line followed the Clyde Valley to Carstairs where the lines to Scotland’s two largest cities diverged.

Reviews:

'A new book by a former railway manager Dennis Lovett, takes a journey into the past and shows just how important Beattock Station was – as campaigners today are calling for it to be reopened.'
(S.Liptrott, Daily Record, 13 March 2024)

'This latest in the splendid series from the Middleton Press follows a difficult line passing through empty countryside with a handful of short-lived branches and a string of long-gone intermediate stations...
The branches are made more fascinating by the wealth of detail.'
(Retired Railway Officers Association (Scotland) newsletter, March 2024)
